DIY Stuffed Felt Watermelon // Birthday Gift Ideas

• DIY Stuffed Felt Watermelon • // The Magical Canopy

oh gosh, i just adore making presents for my friends. this watermelon-themed birthday pack was just as fun as the ones before! i put together an adorable pack of watermelon related presents, if i must say so myself 😉

in today’s post, i’ll not only be sharing with you a tutorial on how to create your very own stuffed felt watermelon (perfect as a keychain or badge), but also some fruity birthday card inspiration.

what you’ll need:

• DIY Stuffed Felt Watermelon • // The Magical Canopy

• felt (red and green)

• black fine marker (you guys know i love my microns!)

• pencil (just for drawing guidelines)

• fabric/white glue (i used elmers’) –> double-sided tape is a good substitute!

• stuffing (optional! i’ll be showing you how to make your own stuffing, heh)

•scissors

how to make:

1. start marking out the oval shape of a watermelon cross section on the green felt with your pencil.

2. using your pencil, draw a similar oval on the red felt too! make sure it’s slightly smaller than the green piece. (the excess green will become the ridge of skin)

{repeat steps 1-2 twice so you have two pieces of green and red felt each}

3. cut out all the pieces of felt.

4. spread glue or paste double-sided tape on one piece of red felt, before pasting it onto the green piece. make sure the flat edges align! this forms one watermelon slice.

{repeat step 4 for the other set of green/red felt}

5. arrange a small amount of stuffing on the centre of one watermelon slice. add glue/tape to the edges and attach the other side!

{instructions on how to make your own stuffing are below! keeping reading :P}

6. use your fine tipped marker to add a couple of black dots (as seeds), and there you have it! a stuffed watermelon slice made of felt.

wasn’t that easy? now for the stuffing!

what you’ll need:

• DIY Stuffed Felt Watermelon • // The Magical Canopy

• cut-up felt (any colour will do!)

• nothing else~!!

how to make:

• DIY Stuffed Felt Watermelon • // The Magical Canopy

1. pick at the end of a small scrap of felt and shred it into soft, fluffy threads. (it helps to do this over a piece of tissue or cloth so it doesn’t get too much)

2. loosen this stuffing a few times with your hands (or pull at a few tighter areas with your fingers) so the stuffing isn’t weird and lumpy!

3. repeat this process till you have a desired amount of stuffing. then you can add it to your watermelon! (see the above steps)

your watermelon should end up slightly puffy and SUPER cute!! i personally love the one i made so much, it was even a lil’ of a pity to give it away. 😉 so i made another for myself!

if you’re looking for a little more to give your friend/family member, here are a few more suggestions that work wonderfully with your felt watermelon!

“You’re 1 in a Melon” Card

• DIY Stuffed Felt Watermelon • // The Magical Canopy

i’ve seen this pun all over the internet and i thought it was about time to use it in one of my projects! (i’m pretty obsessed with puns, heh)

for the card pictured, i used drawing block and hand-lettered the words with my trusty Micron pen. the “1” was coloured in with colour-pencils for a pop of colour!

this card is great for showing your appreciation to the recipient of the gift. and of course, don’t forget to write a heart-felt message on the back!

Fruity Notes

• DIY Stuffed Felt Watermelon • // The Magical Canopy

i found these printables while surfing Pinterest last week (thank you, Pinterest!) and couldn’t resist checking the link out! these free printables work great for a quick birthday note, and the watermelon card goes perfectly with a DIY felt watermelon!

besides, the rest of the fruit-inspired designs are soo cute and i’m sure they’ll look great with any other summery/fruity presents you might want to give out this season. or even hung up with clothespins as room decor!!

Fruit off the Loom

• DIY Stuffed Felt Watermelon • // The Magical Canopy

i went through a rainbow-loom craze a while back, and during which i realized then i’m really spatially unaware. and clumsy. and — wait, where was i? during which, i also found these darling fruit-making tutorials! (and did i mention they’re so much easier than making those funky loom patterns?!! oh yes.)

these loom-band fruits are so easy to make, you don’t even need an actual loom! you just need a crochet needle (i think a thin stick or pen works well too!). the link attached is for the tutorial about making a loom band watermelon, but you can also find plenty of other lovely loom tutorials from that same Youtuber, like other fruits, food and actual bracelets. (for the talented ones among us who can make ’em!!)

hopefully this post inspires you to have a fruitful (hehe) crafting session. if you make these stuffed felt watermelons and take a photo, don’t forget to tag me @themagicalcanopy!

xx, roxanne
